Child Hearing Test
A child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development throughout the first few years of life relies greatly on good hearing. A child’s capacity to communicate with others and develop speech and language may be impacted even by mild hearing loss.
Book your child for a paediatric hearing test if you have any concerns. Better outcomes for a child’s language, learning, and general development can be achieved if hearing loss is discovered earlier rather than later. This is important when looking at school readiness.
Signs of hearing problems in older children
Your older child may exhibit the following symptoms of hearing loss:
- Doesn’t answer the phone when called; grades suffer at school (since they can’t hear the teacher)
- Complaints of tinnitus, ringing in the ears.
- Talks loudly
- Watches television with the volume up
- Mispronounces words
- Generally, gives off the impression of being disinterested or prone to daydreaming
Causes of permanent hearing loss in children
Pregnant mothers who experience certain conditions or illnesses, which can result in
persistent hearing loss include:
- Inherited illnesses that result in the improper development of the inner ear.
- Several genetic conditions, including trisomy 13 and osteogenesis imperfecta.
- Being exposed to diseases during pregnancy, such as rubella (German measles), which can harm a foetus’s developing ears.
- Exposure to loud noises, such as those from personal stereos, rock concerts, or fireworks.
- Certain diseases, such as meningitis and mumps.
Types Of Testing
To evaluate hearing function, a variety of tests are employed, including:
Air Conduction (AC) Pure Tone Audiometry: This test determines hearing thresholds for pure tones using headphones, and it also
reveals the type and severity of hearing loss.
Bone Conduction Pure Tone Audiometry: This test, done in conjunction with
the AC test is to distinguish between sensorineural and conductive hearing
loss. It evaluates thresholds for hearing using a bone vibrator.
Free Field (FF) Pure Tone Audiometry: Used on young children who may
not be able to tolerate headphones, this test gauges responses to sounds
played back through a free-field speaker. The results of this test reveal
general hearing capacity.
Speech audiometry is a test which evaluates capacity to distinguish
between different speech sounds as a measure of hearing ability.
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)
The inability to process specific sounds is known as auditory processing
disorder. Although it may not affect hearing ability, it may limit a child’s
capacity for processing and using auditory information.
Children with APD might have normal hearing but have difficulty
recognising and interpreting the sounds they hear. They might also be
unusually sensitive to sounds.
